"C. Schmaker is Dead. Special to The State Journal. Taylorville, March 17
-- The body of Christopher Schmaker, 60 years old, was found dangling from the
end of a rope in the hay mow in the rear of the home of his son-in-law, Ross
Elliott, in the City Park addition of Taylorville Thursday night at 9 o'clock by
Mr. Elliott and the deceased's daughter, Mrs. Elliott, and his son, Rolla
Schmaker. No motive has been ascribed for the act save that he was despondent
over his health. He suffered a broken leg last year and recently has been
suffering from the flu, though not bedfast. No notes or letters were found on
his person that would throw any light on the matter. Neither Mr. nor Mrs.
Elliott were at home Thursday and upon their arrival, failing to find Mr.
Schmaker, made a search and found the body in the hay mow. It is presumed that
Mr. Schmaker took the rope, threw it over the rafter and then got upon the hay,
which stands in one corner of the barn, placed the noose about his neck and
jumped off, leaving about three feet between his feet and the floor. He had been
separated from his wife for the last twenty years. She is living in Springfield
at the present time. He has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Elliott, for the last
two years. Besides Mrs. Elliott and Rolla Schmaker of Taylorville, Mrs. Ed
Shehan of Clarksdale and Robert Schmaker of Edinburg survive him.
